How to Choose the Correct Engine Oil by VIN and OEM Specification
A VIN can identify the vehicle’s original build information, but the VIN is the starting point—not the oil specification itself. A correct recommendation combines the VIN or exact engine with current manufacturer service information, viscosity, performance category, approval and fill quantity.
Why make, model and year may not be enough
The same vehicle model can be sold with different engines, emissions equipment, transmissions or production changes. A mid-year update can change the required oil. Market and engine code also matter, especially for imported vehicles.
The five details every oil match needs

What if the VIN tool and manual disagree?
Stop and verify. A generic database can contain incomplete market data, while an owner’s manual can cover multiple engines. Confirm the engine code, production date and current manufacturer information. Do not select oil from a single conflicting result.

An OEM approval can control properties not visible from the viscosity alone, including emissions-system compatibility, deposit control, fuel economy, wear protection and drain-interval requirements. Two oils with the same 5W-30 label can be intended for different engines.
