Shell 10W-40 Motor Oil: Specifications, Uses and Compatibility
Formula Shell SAE 10W-40 is a conventional motor oil for compatible gasoline cars and light-duty trucks. The two viscosity numbers help describe how the oil behaves at lower and operating temperatures, but they do not confirm compatibility by themselves.
What does 10W-40 mean?
The “10W” part describes low-temperature viscosity performance; the “40” describes the operating-temperature grade. A 10W-40 oil and a 5W-30 oil are therefore not interchangeable merely because both are multigrade engine oils.
Product overview
| Brand | Shell |
|---|---|
| Product | Formula Shell Motor Oil |
| SAE viscosity | 10W-40 |
| Oil type | Conventional |
| Pack size listed | 1 US quart |

When can 10W-40 be suitable?
Use it when the vehicle manufacturer allows SAE 10W-40 for the engine, ambient temperature and service conditions, and when the performance category on the bottle meets the manual. Older engines do not automatically require thicker oil; condition and manufacturer guidance still matter.
What should you verify?
- Exact engine and model year
- Permitted SAE viscosity grades
- Required API, ACEA or manufacturer approval
- Oil capacity and service interval
- Whether the vehicle uses a gasoline or diesel engine
Can 10W-40 replace 5W-30?
Only if the owner’s manual explicitly permits both grades for the relevant operating conditions. Using a thicker grade without approval can change cold flow, fuel economy and lubrication behavior.
Can it be used for topping up?
Use the same approved grade and specification whenever possible. If the oil level is repeatedly low, inspect for leaks or consumption rather than treating top-up as the repair.
Frequently asked questions
Is 10W-40 always for high-mileage vehicles?
No. Mileage alone does not determine viscosity.
Is this a diesel engine oil?
This listing is for compatible gasoline cars and light trucks. Choose a diesel product with the required category for diesel equipment.
How much is one quart?
One US liquid quart is approximately 946 millilitres.
