Mobil DTE Oil Grades Explained: ISO VG 32 vs 46 vs 68
ISO viscosity grades such as 32, 46 and 68 describe the oil’s viscosity range at 40°C. They are not quality rankings: 68 is not “better” than 32. The correct grade is the one specified for the machine, operating temperature and system design.
ISO VG 32, 46 and 68 at a glance
| Grade | Relative viscosity at the same temperature | Selection principle |
|---|---|---|
| ISO VG 32 | Lowest of these three | Use only where the equipment builder specifies VG 32 |
| ISO VG 46 | Middle | Use only where VG 46 is specified |
| ISO VG 68 | Highest of these three | Use only where VG 68 is specified |
Why viscosity matters
Oil that is too thick can increase drag and reduce cold-start flow. Oil that is too thin can reduce film thickness at operating temperature. Pumps, bearings, clearances and operating temperatures are designed around a specific viscosity range.
What is Mobil DTE Heavy Medium?
Mobil DTE Heavy Medium is the ISO VG 68 member offered on our store. ExxonMobil publishes the following typical data:
| ISO viscosity grade | 68 |
|---|---|
| Kinematic viscosity at 40°C | 65.1 mm²/s |
| Kinematic viscosity at 100°C | 8.7 mm²/s |
| Viscosity index | 95 |
| Pour point | -15°C |
| Flash point, COC | 223°C |
The DTE Named Series is used in compatible circulation systems, turbines, bearings, pumps and certain hydraulic applications where the equipment manufacturer approves the product and grade.
Can you substitute one ISO grade for another?
Not without approval. Ambient temperature, load or wear does not justify guessing a thicker grade. If a machine is overheating, noisy or losing pressure, diagnose the system instead of changing viscosity to hide the symptom.
How to select the correct DTE oil
- Find the lubricant table in the equipment manual.
- Record the ISO VG grade and required performance standard.
- Check the operating-temperature guidance.
- Confirm compatibility with seals, filters and any existing fill.
- Use clean transfer equipment and avoid cross-contamination.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mobil DTE an engine oil?
No. DTE Heavy Medium is an industrial circulating lubricant.
Does “Heavy Medium” mean diesel engine service?
No. It is a Mobil DTE series name, not an engine-oil category.
Can ISO VG 68 be mixed with VG 46?
Do not mix grades unless the equipment and lubricant suppliers approve the combination.
